You are looking north towards the Stadhampton - Chalgrove road which can be seen beyond the gate piers that frame the view in the distance.
The avenue of Lime trees was planted by the Dormers and considering their size could be up to three hundred years old.
The avenue is shown on an estate plan and survey dating from the early eighteenth century. But was this also an entrance drive to a new house?
The gate piers are arranged in a recessed semi-circle and create an ornamental effect, perhaps a grand entrance intended for the mansion that was never built.
During archaeological excavations no sign of a metalled carriageway between the trees was found, so if a drive was ever intended it could be the Dormers dropped the idea when they gave up the building project.
